Uses of Roof Curbs

Equipment Rails

Allows a solid extension above the roof membrane to attach equipment to extend  the structure.

Roof Curb

Provides a rectangular landing for equipment to sit on, the majority of these are all downflow and therefore provides space inside the curb to drop the duct inside the building.

Roof Jack

Used to flash around round pipes that are smaller in diameter.

Roof Stands

Commonly used to support duct running on the roof.

Condenser Curbs

Provides an elevated stand that is connected to the structure that the condenser can be fastened to.

Hoods

Termination of exhaust fans, fresh air intake hoods, flue venting hoods will often require a roof curb.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a roof curb?

Roof curbs are elevated metal frameworks that carry equipment, distribute weight, and can allow penetrations through the roof while still keeping the weather out. Curbs are installed on membrane, gravel, metal, and shingle roofs.

Do you have a roof curb detail?

Submittal details on roof curbs are generally included with the equipment from the manufacturer. Typically, we build to these specifications. Otherwise, we rely on field measurements and drawings to build from.

What is a roof curb adaptor?

Curb adaptors are used to transition from an existing curb to another dimension. In most cases, these are helpful when replacing roof top units (RTU) without disrupting the existing roof. In this scenario, return and supply extension and transitions will happen inside.

How to flash a roof curb?

Flashing a roof curb will completely depend upon your roof style, material, project, and location. In general, good polyurethane caulking, proper fasteners with rubber grommets, and a drip edge flashing will take care of most issues. A drip edge is a hemmed, slightly bent out edge that keeps the “water drips” from following the material up and under the flashing.

What is an exhaust fan roof curb?

In most applications, equipment rails that correspond with the stand on the fan will be necessary. Equipment rails are small curbs with a solid metal top, or a wooden top that has been roofed over. Install the rails directly to the structure and roof over the equipment rails (common on membrane roofs).

How to install a roof curb on an existing membrane roof?

First, spot the location of your curb. Use a marker to trace the outline of the curb and then take a razor knife and cut diagonal from corner to corner past the marks by 6″ – 8″, creating an X. Peel back the roofing, cut away the foam insulation and install the curb.
